Testimonials

On this page you can read a selection of testimonials and comments from my clarinet, saxophone and piano students.

I started my music lessons with Lois a year ago and have loved every minute of the experience – I go once a week and have already passed my grade 1 & 2 piano! She is a wonderful teacher full of energy, and enthusiasm, and very happy to go at whatever pace you wish – I couldn’t recommend her highly enough.

– Nikki, piano student

Lois is just an absolutely brilliant teacher. She is so talented and professional, whilst also patient and supportive. As we approached our sixth decade, my husband and I decided to challenge ourselves to learn a new skill. Two new skills, in fact; reading music and playing a saxophone. Lois has been, and continues to be, the ideal teacher for us both; flexing her approach to our individual needs. We definitely recommend her.

– Jane, saxophone student

Lois is a superb piano teacher who I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone wanting to learn piano or another instrument. She’s awesome with my primary age children, very patient and tailors the sessions to the child allowing them to learn and progress at their own pace. Highly recommend.

– Annette, parent

“I would wholeheartedly recommend Lois to anyone wanting to learn to play the saxophone.”

– Darran, saxophone student

Never thought I could play an instrument. But Lois has managed to bring out the musician in me. I would wholeheartedly recommend Lois to anyone wanting to learn to play the saxophone. Lessons are structured and are tailored to meet your goals and aims. She is very professional in her attitude in all aspects of teaching music, but is also friendly and encouraging and keeps lessons interesting. A first rate teacher for students of any age

Lois’ patience and skill have allowed us to watch our daughter spend her spare time productively and grow in confidence…”

– Sue, parent

Lois has turned an unfocused enthusiasm for keyboard in our daughter into a disciplined skill on the piano which she enjoys in solitary practice and public performance. Lois’ patience and skill have allowed us to watch our daughter spend her spare time productively and grow in confidence with her performance in front of groups. For these reasons, we highly recommend Lois.

“I would certainly recommend Lois to anyone who is considering clarinet lessons.”

– Helen Mead, parent

Lois taught my teenage daughter Molly for about a year. Molly was learning grade 6 clarinet and grade 4/5 theory. Lois was very encouraging and helped Molly a great deal. Molly said she liked the way Lois taught her, particularly the way she used a combination of playing pieces herself, plus playing an orchestral version on a CD and providing piano accompaniment as Molly played. Molly felt very relaxed with Lois and I too, as a parent, thought Lois very easy to get on with. She gave good feedback about progress and I felt that under her tuition Molly could progress quickly.   In November Molly took her theory exam and passed with distinction (95%) and, in the main, we have Lois to thank for that result.  I would certainly recommend Lois to anyone who is considering clarinet lessons for their child (or themselves!).

“I was a very mature learner… I feel more confident in my playing having had Lois as a teacher.”

– Edna Cooper, clarinet student

I would thoroughly recommend Lois as a music teacher. I have been to clarinet lessons with Lois in York for about 18 months. I was a very mature learner and almost a beginner at playing the clarinet when I started lessons with Lois. She has been very encouraging and has a lot of patience and perseverance. She is always on time with lessons and always finishes the lesson on a positive note so that I always come away feeling I have done as well as I can. She also takes an interest in other musical events in which I have been involved in the village and the church and has been very encouraging in all that I do. I certainly feel more confident in my playing having had Lois as a teacher.

“I had never really concentrated on my technical ability… Lois made her teaching methods effective to me as an individual.”

– Matt Rodaway, advanced clarinet/saxophone student

Lois’s lessons were always lots of fun, and this inspired me to take my clarinet playing further. Lois taught me for several years, starting with me having just done my grade 5 Theory and practical and finishing with me passing grade 7. Lois really helped me become a good clarinet player. When I first started having lessons we used to do a lot of technical exercises, looking back this was really good as I had never really concentrated on my technical ability and Lois managed to pick up on this fact in my first couple of lessons making her teaching methods effective to me as an individual.

Whilst Lois was teaching me the clarinet I decided to take my grade 4 Alto Saxophone, so I asked Lois to give me a couple of lessons on the Saxophone. It turns out that Lois wasn’t just good at teaching the Clarinet but the Saxophone as well!

Lois also started to teach me my grade 8 pieces for clarinet, before she left York, which I got a merit in this November. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her support. I’m currently playing the clarinet and saxophone (alto and baritone) in bands with a wide variety of genres as well as on my own. I would thoroughly recommend Lois as a teacher.
